My Samsung fun

By | January 10, 2013

Ok, so you might have seen my recent ranting and raving about Samsung and the issue(s) I’m having with them at the moment. Let me give you the full story

Saturday, 15 December 2012
Bought a new laptop from the Samsung/Digital Experience store in Fourways Crossing. Check this beast out. Yeah, it’s a decent machine. Lots of oomph and whatnot. I was loving it!

Monday, 31 December 2021
A whopping 16 days later, sometime in the afternoon the adapter for the laptop decides to retire itself. Laptop still works, battery is fine, but without the adapter it turned into a paper weight after about 2 hours.

And I’m at the so called Samsung store I bought the laptop with the adapter. I watch the 2 sales guys with their heads attached to phones try and find a replacement because they don’t have any at the store. I also ask for a quote on a further 3 more adapters because one is just not enough. After an hour I leave the adapter at the store (the sales guy said I should) and leave. There is this thing called work that some of us need to do to earn a living don’t ya know.  I ask that they get the replacement adapter by the coming Saturday. It’s agreed and I’ll be phoned and updated.

I phone to verify the adapters have arrived. For starters I’m told to phone some other company because Samsung dude can’t find stock and I’m in luck, this other place, in Woodmead nogal, is open on Saturdays. And apparently the sales dude has the wrong model number. He’ll phone the supplier again and get back to me.

I phone again. No, there is no stock of the adapter.

At this point I start having a conniption. You know, foaming at the mouth, tipping cars. Pretty standard stuff. I want to take the laptop back and get a refund. I am talked out of it by calmer thinkers.

My mom, my Sis and I go to the Samsung store in Clearwater Mall. They don’t have stock of the adapter either. But, here you go. Phone this bunch near Sandton and they’ll sort you out. >:| That’s the second time…
We go back to the Samsung shop in Fourways Crossing. Sales guy I’ve been dealing with is ill for the day (could our last phone conversation have anything to do with it?). New guy takes up the mantle and says he’ll take care of it personally. As he understands it, an adapter has been ordered and should be delivered the next day. He will phone me first thing in the morning.

Feeling positive.

I phone again! No, there is no stock and the supplier is waiting for an incoming shipment. They, the supplier, will have it around the following Friday (18 Jan?).

I think the twitch I’m getting is going to give me whiplash.

Wednesday, 09 January 2013. Around 15:30
I complain on Samsung’s website. About 90 minutes later I get a reply from them stating my must contact the same third party company in Sandton. That’s three. *twitch*

Thursday, 10 January 2013. Today
I contact the aforementioned third party company in Sandton and get a quote for those 3 extra adapters I’m looking for. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick them up tomorrow. If it turns out that way, I’ll probably beat the Samsung store by a week in getting the adapter replaced (from where they’re supposed to be getting it themselves in the first place). And I’ll be able to use my laptop again.

Ponderings about this whole situation:

I’ve had the laptop for 27 days. I’ve not been able to use it for 10 of them. And at the pace the Samsung guys are trying to resolve this I will likely have a very expensive doorstop forevermore. Pretty sure I’m not going to hear from them until I phone them again.

The thing that really gets me about this and I mentioned this to the Samsung guys; I WORK on my laptop. It is an integral part of how I earn my living. Being in IT, without my laptop I am about as useful as a wet wipe at a jelly wrestling championship. Fortunately I still have my old laptop otherwise I would’ve been up shit creek.

About 4 years ago, I had a terrible experience with LG. I’ve not touched an LG product since. As a matter of fact, Samsung became my go-to brand for most electronics and appliances. My house is full of Samsung stuff. And now, after all this, they’re on my shit list as well. As with LG, I’ll probably never buy a Samsung product again. I hope Sony bring out a nice OLED TV. Crappy part is, I’ll now have to become an Apple consumer come next phone upgrade. And that sucks… I like my S3 🙁

Of course, I will also be telling everyone about this experience and providing my reasons for never buying Samsung again. In my own small way, I will be costing them a lot more money then one would expect.

Don’t buy Samsung!

Mr. Sinister

PS: Anyone wanna buy a Samsung TV, fridge or Washing machine?
